Suspect in Critical Condition After Fatally Shooting a Chicago Police Officer

Authorities said a Chicago police officer was in critical condition which resulted to his death on Wednesday during a chase on the city’s south side.

According to Fox Chicago, the incident happened in the 5200 block of S. Spaulding Avenue around 4:45 p.m.. Police Superintendent David O. Brown told reporters that a caller reported a suspect chasing a female with a gun.

When officers arrived, one knocked on the door where the call had come from. A second officer confronted the suspect, and a chase ensued, exchanging gunfire.

“Earlier today, we lost one of our own: an on-duty police officer was fatally shot while responding to a person with a gun call. Please pray for this officer’s family, loved ones, partner, and all of our Chicago Police officers who are grieving this tremendous loss,” the Chicago Police Department said in a tweet.

“This is a tragedy for our city, and we grieve with the officer’s family,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.

Brown described the officer as a five-year force veteran with a promising future.

“Some broken hearts will take a long time to grieve and accept this,” he said.

The suspect is in critical condition while being treated in a Chicago hospital. The suspect will be facing multiple cases as soon as he is capable to attend his hearings.
