Energy Assistance In Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Commerce announced that residents can begin to apply for the two types of energy assistance. Online application is available for both the Energy Assistance Program (EAP) and Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). The EAP has supported over 74,000 households and prevented 11,087 disconnections this winter.

The program allows paying energy and water bills for eligible residents. WAP, on the other hand, provides free home energy upgrades to homeowners and renters to help conserve energy and reduce their bills.

EAP

Since October 2022, the EAP has granted over $ 51.6 million to households, with an average benefit worth $695 per household.

Payments for energy and water bills are given directly to the household’s utility company or a provider of fuel. The federally sponsored program offers worth up to $1,400 but can supply additional support in case of emergencies.

  • A one-person household earning $30,572
  • Two-person household, earning $39,979
  • Three-person household, earning  $49,386
  • Four-person household, earning $58,793

WAP

This program closely collaborates with the EAP to support by permanently reducing energy bills for low-income households. Homes that meet the qualification will have an energy auditor evaluate their homes and see if they qualify for weatherization.

To be eligible, income must be at or less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level. In addition, households that have obtained Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) within the last 12 months are also eligible.

Minnesota Department of Commerce also said that If not eligible for either of these programs, see if you qualify for one of these payments by contributing as much as $8,000. Plus, see how to claim discounted or free electricity benefits.
