New Jersey SNAP Benefits

Gov. Phil Murphy signed the new law that will allow families enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, to continue to receive $95 even after the pandemic assistance from the federal government to control at the end of the month.

This almost doubles up the minimum monthly food assistance that low-income families in New Jersey can receive SNAP benefits, from $50 boosted to $95.  The bill that Gov Murphy signed also allows the state to cut back its contributions if federal aid is expanded, as long as the monthly minimum is met.

Murphy said the end of federal assistance would leave a “significant gap” for several families and place “thousands of families at risk of being food-insecure.” Moreover, Murphy also said that after overcoming the pandemic, he wants to secure that every resident in New Jersey has enough to eat. He mentioned that the New Jersey SNAP benefit will continue to sustain those most in need and said this makes New Jersey the first, and he assumes the only, state to “set an across-the-board minimum benefit.”

New Jersey SNAP Benefits Investment Capital

The state Department of Human Services claimed that New Jersey SNAP benefits received from every eligible household are worth more than $2 billion in additional assistance since the emergency allotments were authorized by Congress in March 2020. The program has roughly 769,000 individuals enrolled from 397,000 families as of November.

Murphy also stated, that he would speak to the Legislature about it and the recent budget has enough funds to accommodate the expansion and that he plans to include the program’s cost, about $32 million, in his forthcoming budget proposal.
