Police believe an Ohio mother is responsible for the brutal murder-suicide that killed four people just moments before local police arrived to inform the family of their eviction from a foreclosed home.
According to the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office, “physical evidence” and the “positioning of the deceased” led investigators to believe that Theresa Cain, 46, shot and killed three of her family members on February 27 before eviction from a foreclosed home.
Deputies heard five quick gunshots shortly before arriving at Cain’s home in Ohio Township, a Cincinnati suburb. Deputies attempted to contact the occupants inside several times but were unsuccessful. Instead, the Sheriff’s Special Response Team was dispatched to the scene and forced their way into the house.

Police discovered five bodies inside the house. According to the release, Steven Cain, 50, Theresa Cain, 46, William Felton, 74, and Ethan Cain, 13, were all discovered dead. Samantha Cain, Theresa’s 20-year-old daughter, was also found alive. Samantha was still in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on Wednesday, March 1, according to police.
Clermont County Sheriff Steve Leahy believes the shots were fired to deter deputies from entering. Steven Cane, according to Leahy, was shot and killed in the basement about 30 minutes earlier, and Teresa’s father, son Ethan, and daughter Samantha were shot just before the deputies arrived to inform them of their eviction from a foreclosed home.
Police stated that the Cain family had financial difficulties before the eviction, leading them to believe that money was Theresa’s motivation.
Samantha is still in critical condition after being shot, but deputies hope she can provide more information once she recovers.
Steve introduced himself on the Critical Khaos Facebook page on October 25. He stated in the post that he was born in Augusta, Georgia, moved to Connecticut in 2012, and then to Cincinnati in 2015.
His full-time job was environmental and safety management for a research and development facility. Cain had 13 books published, including poetry, short stories, and a horror novel.
Cain’s bandmates shared a link to a GoFundMe page set up by his sister’s family to help cover Stephen and his son Ethan’s funeral expenses.
