$372 Weatherization Assistance Program

The program, which is part of the larger Energy Department’s Weatherization and Intergovernmental Programs Office, provides free energy assessments and upgrades to eligible households, such as improving insulation, sealing air leaks, and installing more energy-efficient appliances.

Eligibility for the Weatherization Assistance Program is based on income, with priority given to households with members who are elderly, disabled, or have young children. In addition, the program focuses on serving households with the highest energy burdens, defined as spending more than 6% of their annual income on energy bills

In a published article in The U.S. Sun, the Weatherization Assistance Program has been in place for over 40 years and has helped over 7 million households across the United States. The program has been shown to have significant economic benefits, including creating jobs and reducing energy bills, with estimated savings of $2.1 billion per year for participating households.

The release of the funding comes as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to address climate change and support clean energy solutions. The funding will be distributed to states, territories, and tribal governments to administer the program at the local level.

Energy Secretary Released a Statement

“This funding will help lower energy bills for families across the country while reducing carbon pollution, creating good-paying jobs, and ensuring all communities have access to clean, affordable energy,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in a statement.

The Weatherization Assistance Program has proven to be a successful program that benefits both low-income households and the environment, USA Today reports. The additional funding provided by the Biden administration will help even more eligible households make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes, providing long-term cost savings and contributing to the nation’s efforts to combat climate change.
