The plans will benefit bus drivers and educators with advanced degrees. The additional money will be provided through the North Carolina Transportation Attendance Bonus Proposal, and it is expected to reduce the number of uncovered runs and serve as a recruitment and retention tool. The plans will take effect from the next school year starting in July.

Under the first plan, nearly 650 employees, including teachers, social workers, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, guidance counselors, and psychologists, who possess advanced degrees, will receive an extra payment of $1,000 or more.

The raise will be available to those who have a relevant master’s, advanced, and doctoral degree, obtained from a regionally accredited Institution of Higher Education (IHE) in an education or subject area directly related to an existing area of licensure and current teaching assignment, according to a published article in The U.S. Sun.

The employee’s assignment should be in the area for which the degree applies, and they should have completed at least one course before August 1, 2013, for the degree earned at the master’s, six-year, or doctoral degree level.

How to Become Eligible?

In a published article in ABC 11, under the second plan, bus drivers, bus team leaders, safety assistants, and mechanics with perfect attendance will be eligible for an attendance bonus. The board expects the plan to incentivize perfect attendance and reduce uncovered runs. Total bonuses for bus drivers could be worth up to $3,000 in a single year.

The Wake County Board of Education hopes that the additional compensation will reduce the number of uncovered runs and help recruit and retain employees. The source of the additional compensation is local savings, and it is unclear how many employees will be covered under the two plans. The changes are expected to take effect from the next school year starting in July.
