The Republican Governor of Arizona Doug Ducey has spent the majority of his time left on his term, ordering to work in teams to install the double shipping containers along the state’s southern border with Mexico. Moreover, the Associated Press reported Sunday that Ducey is about to end term limits in January.

In August, Ducey instructed his workers to patch up the holes in former President Donald Trump’s border. He then issued an executive order to start the construction, and the state initially spent $6 million erecting a double-height barrier of containers in Yuma, Arizona, filling in about 3,800 feet of the border.

Ducey has since experimented with and expanded the project in recent months, adding thousands of additional containers that stretch for miles along Coronado National Forest adjacent to Tucson. Environmentalists and tribal governments and the federal government are worried about this project that could cover 10 miles for $95 million.

This barrier aims to stop migrants and asylum seekers. Moreover, there have been a record number of migrants stopped there this year. Border officials said law enforcement stopped people 2.38 million times in the 12 months ending in September, a figure up 37% from the year before. Areas with mountain ranges rising abruptly from the desert and a diverse environment of plants and animals is federal land maintained by the US Forest Service.

In October, Ducey filed a lawsuit claiming that the federal land along the border known as the Roosevelt Reservation belongs to the state, not the US government, which means that Arizona has the constitutional right to protect itself against what he cited as “countless migrants” resulting in “a combination of drugs, crime, and humanitarian crisis”.

However, in response to Ducey, he allegedly violets the law by the containers on federal and tribal land there, according to the US Bureau of Reclamation and the Cocopah tribal nation. Furthermore, the bureau demanded that the state take away the containers but the state has not, and has subsequently embarked to start on a larger project that is currently moving quickly more than 300 miles to the east.
