Former Sheriff’s Deputy Will Avoid Charges

In June 2020, the former sheriff’s deputy shot Guardado five times in the back, claiming the 18-year-old displayed a handgun, looked at him and his partner, Christopher Hernandez, and ran away.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office stated that there was no evidence to prove that the former sheriff’s deputy used his power to kill Guardado after confirming that there was no surveillance video because the cameras were not working during the shooting, CNN reported.

The disciplinary actions for Vega and Hernandez will be decided after the Internal Affairs Bureau completes reviewing the case and sends its findings to the committee.

Guardado’s Family Received an $8 Million Settlement

The Board of Supervisors approved an $8 million settlement after Guardado’s wrongful death at the hands of the former sheriff’s deputy. However, Guardado’s family continues to demand justice, especially now that the prosecutor’s decision means that Vega and Hernandez might not be removed from their positions.

The grieving family strongly believes that the sheriff’s deputy and his partner had no justifiable reason for killing Guardado and will remain devastated by his loss.

Guardado’s death might be evidence of the racial discrimination from the police force that sparked following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020.
