Jennifer Lopez plays a deadly assassin who lives as a recluse in the wilderness until an unexpected threat to her estranged daughter (Lucy Paez) forces her to come out of hiding to protect her.
“I’m a killer, but I’m also a mother,” Lopez says in the trailer, which depicts her racing through various locations in a series of high-speed chases through a seaside city, a motorcycle pursuit in the mountains, and plenty of gunfire as she flees dangerous men in pursuit. “And I’ll die to protect her.”
The Mother, which was directed by Niki Caro, is the first film in the actress‘ three-film contract with Netflix. The original screenplay was written by Straight Outta Compton’s Andrea Berloff and Lovecraft Country’s Misha Green. Gael Garcia Bernal, Paul Raci, Omari Hardwick, and Joseph Fiennes are also featured in the upcoming drama.
In September, Netflix unveiled the first image from the upcoming film, releasing a teaser that showed Lopez in the desolate wilderness hunting deer and appearing to keep herself in fighting shape by performing pull-ups as she trained for battle in the far-off, icy location.
Regarding her kidnapped daughter, Lopez said in the video, “She needs protection right now. If there is trouble, come find me. You saw what was out there. It’s going to keep coming.
The thriller is a significant departure from Lopez’s January streaming debut, Shotgun Wedding on Prime Video. Lopez plays Darcy, a bride whose wedding to Tom (Josh Duhamel) is hijacked by criminals in that film.
Duhamel previously told ET that Lopez “is a force of nature.” She is very enjoyable to work with.
At the time, he added, “I had known her for years, but I had never had the opportunity to work with her. She’s funny, a lot of fun, and super professional, so it was easy for us to get along.
When The Mother debuts on May 12 for Mother’s Day weekend on Netflix, Lopez’s fans will get to see a new side of her.
