According to the Department of Justice, former ABC News investigative journalist James Gordon Meek was arrested Tuesday on criminal liabilities related to the alleged transportation of images of child sexual abuse.

Meek is charged with child pornography transportation and faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and a maximum penalty of twenty years in jail if condemned. Meek allegedly engaged in sexually explicit conversations in which the participants expressed enthusiasm for the sexual abuse of children and possessed devices with such images.

Meek abruptly resigned from the Disney-owned network last year after an FBI raid on his Arlington, Virginia, home. The abrupt resignation of Meek, who worked as a national-security investigative producer for ABC News and regularly worked on sensitive stories, perplexed media insiders who suspected the raid was related to his work.

The Justice Department said that lead ultimately led to a court-authorized search of Meek’s residence by task force members in April 2022, where law enforcement grabbed multiple devices allegedly containing proof of the transportation of images of child sexual abuse.

In two of those conversations, a username allegedly associated with Meek received and circulated child sexual abuse materials through an internet-based messaging platform,” the DOJ continued.

The case against Meek was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the DOJ to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, the department announced.
