Steps Workers Need to Take After Getting Laid Off

According to a published post by Cheddar News, 40,000 workers from companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet alone are experiencing job loss over the past week. With this trend on the rise, here are some steps suggested by Julie Bauke, president and chief career strategist of The Bauke Group.

Negotiate exit package. If it is possible, increase your exit package. This could be either in weeks of severance or an extension of your medical coverage.

Plan your next move. If you just got laid off, do not sulk and waste time asking why. Take a breather and analyze your next best move. Whether you want to work with another company or start your own business, the best action is to sit back and think of possibilities that best serve your goals.

Network with contacts. After getting laid off, working with companies makes you earn and build connections. You can use these to build up your future employment. You better utilize this network to your advantage and ask for better opportunities.

File for unemployment. You definitely must take this seriously as many workers forget to file for unemployment and get a hard time looking for a new job. After getting laid off, you get severance pay, but you can also get unemployment benefits once you finish receiving the payment.

Get medical care before your insurance expires. Get your medical stuff taken care of while you still have your medical care. As you get laid off, your medical care and insurance plans do not expire until the set date arrives. With this, you can focus on getting the best out of your medical procedures and utilize them before they expire. Well, you can also continue this plan for your sake but it would be covered by your finances.
