The jury found the suspect guilty of manslaughter even though he originally faced second-degree murder and aggravated assault charges.
Florida Man Guilty of Beating Wife to Death
In Tampa, a man has been charged with second-degree murder for beating his wife which led to her death in 2021, now facing charges of manslaughter and sentenced to 12 years in jail. A Tampa judge sentenced Anthony Barker to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Just before she passed away, Phoebe told a nurse that her husband got aggressive toward her and beat her up against her will. Her husband, Anthony Barker told the authorities Phoebe fell out of bed while his attorneys told the judge that she died of kidney failure.
Husband Sentenced To 12 Years in Prison
Last December, Barker went to trial after being charged with second-degree murder and aggravated battery, but the jury that oversaw the trial convicted him guilty of manslaughter. He maintained his claim that Phoebe did not pass away from domestic abuse, but rather because of chronic disease.
He refused to admit to his wrongdoings and asked for mercy. “I have to say I didn’t do what they said I did,” Barker claimed. The victim’s mother, Phoebe Conklin, asked the judge before sentencing Barker to give him the maximum allowed by law.
