Tax scofflaws Todd and Julie Chrisley, reality TV real estate tycoons, are to report to federal prison by the end of January due to the denial of their bail request.
Reality TV Stars, to Report to Federal Prison Later This Month
The stars of Chrisley Know Best were convicted of numerous financial crimes, including conspiring to defraud community banks out of more than $30 million of fraudulent loans last June 2022. These loans were created by filing falsified bank statements and personal financial statements. The couple’s accountant, Peter Tarantino, was also convicted of numerous related crimes.
As soon as they received their money, the Chrisleys used the money on cars, clothes, real estate, and travel expenses. They then falsely obtained new loans to pay back some of the old ones. With this cycle, their funds hit a drought, filed bankruptcy, and pleaded poverty to avoid paying back more or less $20 million.
Chrisley Couple Convicted for Multiple Counts of Tax Evasion
During the case summary, federal prosecutors in Georgia stated that the couple failed to file tax returns in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. They weren’t also able to pay their delinquent back taxes even as they earned millions from their eponymous real estate-focused show that aired on the USA Network.
According to a published post by Law&Crime, Todd Chrisley publicly complained and/or boasted of paying some $750,000 to $1 million per year in taxes at the height of his fame while being interviewed on a radio show after the verdicts came down.
54-year-old Todd Chrisley was convicted on 8 separate counts while 50-year-old Julie Chrisley was convicted on 10 separate counts. The husband was sentenced to 12 years in prison and the wife was given seven years. During the sentencing, it was observed that the celebrity couple shows little to no remorse for their monetary crimes.
