Central Iowa Basic Income Pilot Program Offers $500 No String Attached Monthly Payment

CEO of the nonprofit IMPACT Community Partnership Anne Bacon figured out why people experience financial problems and the reason is much simpler than others might think. Bacon said it on Wednesday at a launch event for a new pilot program that will provide financial relief to more than 100 struggling central Iowans. Moreover, the money arriving doesn’t add up with what needs to go out, and that’s when somebody falls into poverty, she said, standing in front of a crowd at The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement.

Bacon’s organization is just one of 36 community partners supporting UpLift, a Central Iowa Basic Income Pilot program, that will provide 110 individuals $500 a month for the next two years. Eleven public and private entities such as the Mid-Iowa Health Foundation, Polk County, Uniquely Urbandale, and United Way of Central Iowa have raised $2.5 million to finance the state’s first guaranteed cash assistance program.

Ashley Ezzio, one of two program coordinators at The Harkin Institute co-leading the pilot program said that they come together to invest and provide programs and services that are there when people them most, and she also ask the public what if “we consider a different approach?” she said. “What if we could show up before folks are in crisis?” she questioned the crowd.

Who Is Eligible For The Central Iowa Basic Income Pilot Program?
