The Minnesota Department of Commerce made an announcement earlier this month that Residents can start the applications for two types of energy assistance.
Minnesota Department of Commerce Announcement About The Energy Relief Program
Over 114,000 applications have been received for payment worth up to $1,400. Moreover, The Minnesota Department of Commerce announced earlier this month that residents can begin submitting applications for two kinds of energy assistance which are the Energy Assistance Program (EAP) and the Weatherization Help Program (WAP).
Both EAP and WAP now accept applications online. Almost 74,000 houses have benefited from the EAP this winter, and 11,087 disconnections have been avoided. The program assists eligible residents with their energy and water costs. WAP, on the other hand, offers renters and homeowners free home energy upgrades to support them save energy and reducing their expenditures.
The EAP has given out about $51.6 million to homes since October 2022, with an average benefit of $695 per household. Water and energy bills are paid directly to the household’s utility provider or fuel supplier.
Who Can Be Eligible For The Program?
To be eligible, the federally funded program provides up to $1,400 but can supply additional support in case of emergencies.
The following annual income thresholds should apply:
- One person in a household, $30,572
- Two-person in a household, $39,979
- Three-person in a household, $49,386
- Four-person in a household, $58,793
For low-income residents, this program works closely with the EAP to help lower energy expenses permanently. Houses that satisfy the requirements will have an energy auditor that examines them to check whether weatherization is necessary. They will be on the lookout for issues including air leaks, inadequate insulation, and damaged furnaces. Income must be at or lesser than 200 percent of the federal poverty line in order to qualify.
Also, households that have obtained Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) within the last 12 months are eligible.
