The United States Government’s Unemployment Insurance (UI)

The federal-state unemployment insurance (UI) system helps many unemployed workers who struggle to make ends meet that has lost their jobs by temporarily replacing part of their wages. Under certain circumstances, unemployed workers who exhaust their common state-funded unemployment benefits before they can find work can obtain additional weeks of benefits.

The United States government establish All states to receive federal funding to provide their unemployed citizens with additional weeks of Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Assistance (PEUC) benefits during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) to some of those who lost their jobs through no fault of their own could normally be eligible for UI in their state. These and other pandemic-related emergency UI programs ended nationwide on the first weekend of September 2021, providing a financial boost through these programs even before the aforementioned date.

How Long Does Unemployment Benefits Last?

The United States government allows each state to set its own Unemployment Insurance (UI) limit regarding the number of weeks through which unemployed residents could receive benefits. Here are the states providing more than the 26-week maximum:

  • Massachusetts, which reverted to providing up to 30 weeks of UI, effective September 5, 2021, the maximum number of weeks is lowered  to 26 when a federal extended benefits program is in place as it was during the pandemic or in periods of low unemployment such as those immediately before the pandemic
  • Montana offers up to 28 weeks of unemployment benefits

Moreover, these are the states that provide fewer than the typical 26-week maximum include:

  • Arkansas, which offers regular benefits for up to 16 weeks
  • Iowa lowered its maximum to 16 weeks for claims filed after July 3, 2022
  • Michigan, expanded the maximum number of weeks to 26 earlier in the COVID-19 emergency but cut back to 20 weeks for new applicants in 2021
  • Oklahoma provides 16 weeks of Unemployment Insurance (UI)
  • South Carolina and Missouri, provide up to 20 weeks of Unemployment Insurance (UI)
