Teen fatally stabs rival cheerleader and receives a nine-year sentence.
Teen Kills Rival Cheerleader in New York
A 15-year-old teen was sentenced to nine years in prison after stabbing her rival cheerleader from New York high school. Judge Susan Cacace of the Westchester County District Attorney’s office said that the suspect was not named because she’s a minor. The suspect will spend three to nine years in prison after she pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter.
According to a published post by Fox News, the 16-year-old victim Kayla Green was a cheerleader at Mount Vernon High School. The stabbing happened during a large brawl after a parade to celebrate the 12th state championship title won by the high school boys’ basketball team. Green was the captain of the MVHS junior varsity cheer squad. She was reportedly stabbed in the stomach over a “long-standing” cheerleading rivalry within the town. She was then pronounced dead at the hospital.
A Rivalry that Caused the Death of a Cheerleader
The District Attorney’s office reported that the girl who killed her was part of an independent cheer club Green used to be a member of. The suspect expressed remorse for her bad choices as she was sentenced in court. After that, she apologized for taking away a life of a big sister and a daughter. The victim’s family was dissatisfied with the decision and apology as the suspect could be out of prison in a few years.
According to DA Mimi Rocah, Green’s death was a senseless one which devastated the community. She followed by saying that the Mount Vernon community remains in mourning. She promised to devote herself to working with our vital community partners for meaningful violence prevention and intervention.
