Those affected by Hurricane Ian last year may be able to claim some of their losses on their tax returns

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has stated that if the loss was caused by a federally declared disaster, individuals may be able to “deduct casualty and theft losses relating to your home, household items, and vehicles on your federal income tax return.”

However, the website does mention that individuals cannot claim losses that are covered by insurance unless they filed a timely claim for reimbursement and reduced the loss by the amount of any expected reimbursement.

The IRS website provides more information on submitting a claim, and individuals can use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool or the IRS2Go mobile app to check the status of their return. The IRS advises that people can check the status of their 2022 income tax refund 24 hours after e-filing and four weeks after filing a paper return. Individuals can also check the status of their 2020 and 2021 tax year returns, but updates on those returns will not appear until three or four days after filing.
