Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) mentioned in Yahoo News reportedly encouraging New Mexico legislators to push into the state’s projected surplus to fund bolstered tax and put another $750 into the pockets of qualifying individuals and $1,500 for couples who file jointly.

Nora Meyers Sackett, a spokeswoman for the governor wrote in an email on Wednesday the details of the proposal for more tax rebate checks for New Mexicans. Furthermore, The Land of Enchantment’s projected budget surplus could reach as high as $3.6 billion due to a gush of oil and gas production. The current, tentative proposal calls for pursuing rebates of about $750 per taxpayer or $1,500 for every jointly filed couple.

Governor Grisham Will Convince legislative leaders to Pass His Proposal

According to a KRQE News 13 report, “The record-high income estimates give a unique chance to keep more money in New Mexicans’ pockets,”. As the session draws near, “Governor Grisham will continue to keep in touch with legislative leaders as the session approaches to develop a potential package.”

However, the details of the proposal still need to be convened by the state legislature and it is set to scheduled by Jan. 17, 2023, for a 60-day session. Moreover, Lujan Grisham’s party will control both chambers of the state lawmakers, much as the Democrats did prior to the midterm elections.

New Mexico has three waves of refunds during the previous year were launched in May, July, and August, respectively. Including the $250 payment for individual tax filers earning under $75,000 in 2021 and $500 for joint filers earning less than $150,000 that was rolled out in July. Additionally, it includes a $250 payment to individual filers and $500 to those who filed jointly in May and August.
