Federal agents prevented the suspect from fleeing the apartment parking lot in his car.
According to police, a Kansas man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Saturday after a standoff with federal agents attempting to serve a search warrant.
On March 10, 2023 around 5:08 p.m., the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Taskforce responded to the 9600 block of Rosewood to serve a felony warrant. As the suspect drove toward the entry/exit of the apartment complex, federal agents stopped the vehicle. As the arrest team was contacting the suspect, the suspect fired towards the agents. Agents returned fire and the suspect was injured. The suspect then exited the vehicle, ran back toward his apartment, and barricaded himself.
According to John Lacy of the Overland Park Police Department, federal agents attempted to block the suspect’s vehicle so he couldn’t drive away.
Lacy said the suspect shot at the federal agents before running into his apartment and barricading himself. The agents and the suspect, who was injured, exchanged gunfire.
Residents were asked to stay in their apartments for several hours while the standoff lasted. .
The standoff continued into Saturday. Police and federal agents were able to enter the suspect’s apartment by the afternoon before he died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to WDAF-TV.
The suspect’s identity has not been revealed. Officials have not released any information about the felony arrest warrant.
Overland Park, Kansas, is located about 12 miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri.
