In 2017, a man was convicted of killing a New York City emergency medical technician by running her over with her ambulance.
On Wednesday, a Bronx jury found Jose Gonzalez guilty of murder in the death of Yadira Arroyo, a 14-year New York City Fire Department veteran and mother of five.
According to authorities, Gonzalez, now 31, jumped into the driver’s seat of the ambulance on the evening of March 16, 2017, when Arroyo got out after being flagged down by a pedestrian on a Bronx street. She and her partner were going to an emergency call about a pregnant woman.

Gonzalez, according to prosecutors, ran over the NYC Emergency Medical Technician before crashing into cars.
“We finally, finally get justice for her,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said at a news conference following the conviction, according to the New York Times.
Gonzalez, who has a history of arrests and violence, was said to be high on drugs then, but his legal representation said he was mentally ill.
His trial, postponed for several years while he underwent psychiatric evaluations to determine his mental fitness, began last month.
Attorney Richard Barton told The Associated Press that he didn’t understand how the jury decided to convict his client and intended to appeal the decision. He claimed that jurors ignored the results of drug tests and Gonzalez’s “delusional state of mind” at the time.
Now, Gonzales, the culprit behind the death of the NYC Emergency Medical Technician, has been arrested and convicted for the crime that he committed.
