The Biden administration is eager to set a new rule that would significantly limit migrants’ ability to qualify for asylum at the southern border. (Axios)
when the pandemic-era Title 42 policy ends on Dec. 21, officials are worried that Border Patrol stations would face severe overcrowding, and the Department of Homeland Security personnel will be overwhelmed too.
The rapid expulsion of migrants and asylum seekers at the border permitted by Title 42, was implemented during the Trump presidency and expanded by President Biden. It’s scheduled to be removed in less than two weeks, barring last-minute court intervention.
Moreover, Encounters with migrants at the southern border are already at a record high, with the daily total surpassing 9,000 three times. Currently, the authorities are getting ready for the potential numbers between 12,000 to 14,000 migrants trying to cross every day.
The New Rule
The new regulation is still being finalized but would make a person (as was previously reported by Axios) ineligible for asylum unless they fulfill any legal pathways to enter the U.S.
