The sweeping agenda of the DFL Party trifecta at the State Capitol, which propose a front $17.6 billion surplus attracted a lot of Minnesotans’ attention leading lawmakers in the state suggesting to cut the proposal.

The Minnesota Lawmakers Will Consider To Eliminate The Social Security Tax

The Minnesota Department of Revenue claimed that eliminating the Social Security tax will affect more than 400,000 tax returns, resulting in an average tax bill cut of $1,200. Moreover, the state would also lose more than $500,000 million annually in tax revenue. However, DFL legislators are worried about the $500 million source of revenue that the state might lose because it will result in a bad economic year.

Sunday Morning, Melissa Hortman the DFL House Speaker together with new DFL Senate Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic were both guests on WCCO.

“It ends up giving a tax break to billionaires and multimillionaires. So when you have people that earn hundreds of millions of dollars annually or billionaires, they probably don’t mind a tax cut,” Hortman said. “That money could probably be wiser to invest in the economy and other places.”

“The Senate’s gonna hear the Social Security tax cut bill to repeal and eliminate the taxes on Social Security, I think they’re gonna hear it this week, so we’re going to hear bills and we want Minnesotans at the table informing us what they feel about these bills, and then we’ll make a decision,” Dziedzic said.

The Other Proposals

On the other hand, the suggested tax cuts include a reduction in overall tax rates and boosting the child tax credit. The so-called “Walz checks” initiative is another proposal for direct taxpayer relief that provides direct cash payments to Minnesotans residents. Earlier this year, Gov. Tim Walz proposed checks worth $2,000 for married couples and $1,000 for individuals.

Most DFLers are definitely not on the same page for that huge amount, and Walz says he will continue to push for some amount to go directly back to the people.
