Instacart+ Membership in Move To Fight Food Insecurity, SNAP Benefits Is Now Discounted

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has increased online ordering options for recipients that have led to rising in SNAP similar to customers using the grocery delivery and pickup platform of Instacart.

Currently, Instacart is aiming to connect even more households with low income to its service with the announcement of a new upgraded and discounted Instacart+ membership for SNAP participants nationwide. This program is part of the company’s Instacart Health initiative, which is designed to promote and encourage people to buy healthier food and good living.

According to a published post by Yahoo Finance, the benefits of these are processed through the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card system. The SNAP or is formerly known as food stamps, is a U.S. Department of Agriculture program that provides financial assistance to help and support low-income Americans to buy their food.

Beginning on Dec. 20, 2022, Instacart said that anyone who has used an EBT card to pay for their groceries on Instacart in the past six months can get an Instacart+ membership at $4.99 a month for 12 months and a 50% savings off the regular price. Instacart+ allows households to have access to free delivery and pickup on orders for over $35. It even offers 5% credit back on pickup orders and lessened service fees on every order.

In a blog, Instacart said they want to help put healthy food on the table. SNAP households have also reported that online grocery shopping offers more convenience, less stress, and time-saving and now 95% of more than 30 million Americans are undergoing nutrition insecurity. They now have access from retailers for delivery that accept EBT SNAP payment online via Instacart.

Earlier a report from GOBankingRates, customers of SNAP Instacart can go to “Account Settings” and add their EBT card as a payment method. A debit or credit card should also be linked to cover their taxes, fees, delivery tips, and any other items not eligible under SNAP.

The national and regional grocery chains that accept Instacart EBT payments are Publix, Aldi, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, and Stop & Shop.

Their research has shown that online grocery shopping of people can provide benefits for families that are on a tight food budget, including SNAP recipients. Courtney Smith, SVP of Program Research, Innovation, and Impact at No Kid Hungry said that Instacart’s disregarded membership for SNAP recipients is one of their solutions that can help a lot of food-insecure families including their saving time, manage their budgets, and reduce transportation barriers.
