President Joe Biden has invited top Democratic donors and fundraisers to a meeting in Washington the following week as he gets closer to announcing his likely bid for reelection in 2024, according to two people familiar with the situation who spoke to CNN.
Biden Prepares To Announce His Candidacy For Reelection
The meeting with prominent donors is the most recent indication that Biden is getting ready for his reelection campaign, which Democratic officials have said could start this month or last until the summer.
Just days after the fourth anniversary of his 2020 presidential campaign announcement, Biden is inviting the top financiers of his previous campaign to an event in Washington on Friday. The event is anticipated to take place away from the White House grounds, though specifics are still taking shape.
As Biden prepares to announce his candidacy for reelection, the event is not being billed as a fundraiser but rather as an attempt to rally donors.
Top Democratic Fundraisers Are Included On The Campaign Invitation List
According to the two people with knowledge of the situation, top Democratic fundraisers as well as donors and bundlers who contributed more than $1 million to Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign are included on the invitation list.
Due to their prior donor status and connections to the president, JB Pritzker of Illinois and Phil Murphy of New Jersey have also been invited to attend, one of the people said.
News of the invitations was initially reported by The New York Times.
When asked about his plans for 2024, Biden said in Ireland that he would probably make an announcement “relatively soon,” but officials claim that there is no real pressure on Biden to formally launch a reelection bid.
The president, who is notorious for making decisions at the eleventh hour, has been slower to set a deadline for formally announcing his intentions. In private, Biden has told several elected officials that he is “definitely running,” but he hasn’t been able to get any firmer word from him.
A CNN request for comment received no response from the Democratic National Committee.
