A Walgreens employee in Nashville, Tennessee, shot a woman who was seven months pregnant this week after suspecting she had stolen cosmetics from the pharmacy, according to the authorities. She underwent an emergency C-section, and she and her newborn baby are still being cared for at the hospital.
Travonsha Ferguson, 24, was fatally shot by a Walgreens team leader on Wednesday night after he followed her out of the store after receiving information about the alleged stealing, according to Nashville police.
Mitarius Boyd, 21, told police that he fired his semi-automatic weapon in self-defense because “he was in fear” and he was unsure whether Ferguson or the other lady she was with had weapons.
According to authorities, another worker notified Boyd that two women were reportedly stealing cosmetics from the business. According to authorities, he started filming the women as they put things in a shopping cart and a huge shoulder bag, and he later followed them to the car in the parking lot where they started loading things into the trunk.
According to authorities, one of the women took out a can of mace as Boyd started shooting and sprayed it when he got close to the back of the car.
According to authorities, the other woman drove Ferguson, who had sustained several gunshot wounds, to the hospital before she vanished.
According to investigators, the victim underwent an emergency C-section, and her unborn child was unharmed by the gunfire. According to authorities, both Ferguson and the infant were hospitalized on Thursday and were both in critical condition.
Whether Boyd will be charged will be decided by the Nashville District Attorney.
Boyd is “no longer employed at Walgreens,” according to a statement sent by the business on Sunday.
The violence of any type will not be permitted in our shops, according to Walgreens. “The safety of our patients, customers, and team members is our top priority,” the company said. “We are assisting the local authorities and take this matter seriously.”
According to court documents, Boyd was charged with disorderly conduct in October 2022 after he refused to leave the Best Buy store following a quarrel over a Play Station 5. Boyd was notified by staff members that the Play Station 5 wasn’t in stock, but according to court documents, he remained. Eventually, the accusation was dropped, according to the records.
According to court records, Ferguson has previously been accused of trespassing, vandalism, and violence.
Boyd was working on the inquiry, according to Nashville police.
