Gov. Inslee Announces Washington’s Purchase Of A 3-year Supply Of Abortion Pills

Gov. Jay Inslee said that Washington State has acknowledged a three-year supply from the Department of Corrections (DOC) of a leading abortion pill called mifepristone worth of $1.23 million in anticipation of a court ruling that could limit its availability.
Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Des Moines, is the one who sponsored SB 5768, in which the state agency is allowed to distribute wholesale abortion pills to both regular citizens as well as DOC prison inmates. In a statement, Keiser touted powerful voter support for abortion pills in the state, she told her associates before April 12 about the Ways and Means Committee vote that Keiser cannot predict what will happen next in the area of reproductive care. Furthermore, Keiser also said that the option is obtainable to the residents of Washington state.

SB 5768 determines that the abortion pills market could not overreach the list price and contains a $5 cost per dose.

The Ways And Means Of The Abortion Pills

The Senate floor amendments duplicated those proposed in Ways and Means. Sen. John Braun, R-Centralia proposed one of the amendments that would have removed the fee and instead require DOC to recover “sufficient payment to cover the cost of abortion pills.”

Other amendments proposed in both Ways and Means about abortion pills as well as on the Senate floor would have mandated DOC to be licensed and settle the state business and occupation tax. Another would ban DOC from purchasing more abortion medication without legislative authority and funding.

Committee vote, Sen. Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver on April 12, where referred to the mass purchase of abortion pills as “highly unusual,” adding that the Legislature passes policy and provides the funding, and the executive branch maintains the Legislature’s direction. That demands to be the process if it proceeds.

At the April 12 Ways and Means meeting June Robinson, D-Everett, said “Given the anticipation and the landscape about reproductive care in the country right now we want to keep flexible. If the further possibility of purchasing extra abortion pills becomes necessary. We do not want to bind it to the Legislature is in session.”

SB 5768 will now progress to the House, where it will be referred to a committee.
