Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to two life terms last month after being found guilty of killing his wife and son in June 2021

The prison is located about 40 miles from Augusta, Georgia, and is home to a specialized unit for inmates with protective concerns. The South Carolina Department of Corrections cited Alex Murdaugh’s notoriety as the reason for his placement in this unit. The unit is composed of 28 inmates, and Alex Murdaugh has been assigned to a single 8-by-10-foot cell with his own bed, toilet, and sink.

The disbarred attorney is accused of committing the murder to delay a financial reckoning. In addition to the murder charges, he also faces charges for the theft of almost $9 million from his former law firm and clients. Alex Murdaugh is currently appealing the verdict and maintains his innocence.

The all-male facility operates its own factory that produces upholstered furniture and modular office systems in addition to powder-coating metal products. The prison also offers a program called “Operation Behind Bars” for at-risk youth and adults to tour the facility and hear from repentant inmates.

Alex Murdaugh is due back in court on April 21 for a status hearing on the 99 financial crimes charges he faces in four counties. Despite the public fascination with his case, which has led to him receiving love letters from admirers, Alex Murdaugh is unlikely to participate in the “Operation Behind Bars” program as he maintains his innocence.
