The Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are going to be defunded on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.
Former President Donald Trump called for federal law enforcement agencies
Trump baselessly accused Democrats of “weaponizing” these agencies and urged Republicans in Congress to defund them “until they come to their senses.”
The statement came one day after Trump was arraigned in Manhattan court for a probe into his possible involvement in a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign.
During the arraignment, Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts related to falsifying New York business records to conceal information from American voters before and after the election. The call to defund federal law enforcement agencies is not new for some of Trump’s allies, such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who have also made similar demands.
However, this is a notable claim as Republicans have previously attacked Democrats for wanting to defund the police following protests against police brutality.
Trump’s arraignment came as he continues to lead in many 2024 GOP primary hypothetical matchups, and some candidates are still considering their own bids.
Many declared and presumed contenders have come to Trump’s defense
Trump’s call to defund federal law enforcement agencies has been met with criticism from Democrats and some Republicans who view it as a dangerous and irresponsible move. Critics argue that defunding these agencies would leave the country vulnerable to crime and terrorism.
The DOJ and FBI are critical agencies responsible for enforcing federal laws and investigating potential threats to national security. Defunding them could have far-reaching consequences that could harm the country’s ability to protect its citizens.
