Progressives Biden’s Pivot To Center In Run-Up To 2024 Campaign

President Biden promised when he was running for president in 2020 to “no more drilling on federal lands, period” and this month, he authorized an $8bn oil project in Alaska, violating that campaign pledge. Moreover, Biden had said he is eager to back granting statehood to the District of Columbia. Last week, he signed a Republican bill overturning modifications to the DC criminal code, which critics attacked as violating home rule. Biden previously accused former president Donald Trump of waging “an unrelenting assault on the values and history as a nation of immigrants” because he took the US-Mexican border.

The Biden administration reportedly thought about reintroducing the practice of holding migrant families who cross the border illegally, according to stories that surfaced this month. Supporters of immigrant rights have denounced the proposal as well as one that would further limit who can seek refuge in the US.

On immigration, party activists are already crying foul in anticipation of tougher enforcement measures at the border even as such moves are a political necessity not just for Biden but the several red-state Senate Democrats up for re-election in 2024.
