NEW YORK — It was a violent weekend in the Bronx, where a man was stabbed to death after a fight with his neighbor and, just 24 hours later, two people were shot sitting in car.

Chad Boggs says he’s traumatized after seeing his neighbor 27-year-old Tyquen Pleasant lose his life over a fight about loud music.

“I close my eyes, I see him. I see his eyes looking at me. ‘Cause his eyes were open the whole time I was doing CPR,” he said. “She came out of her apartment, and then they ran towards each other and started fighting. And they kinda hugged up, like, close and that’s when she reached around and got him in the back with that knife.”

It happened early Friday morning on Elsmere Place in the Bronx’s Tremont neighborhood. According to police, the woman was arrested and charged with murder.

Darnell Johnson, 34, was shot and killed while sitting in his car early Saturday morning in the Tremont section, according to investigators. A second man was hurt, and the gunman is still on the loose.

“It’s frightening, very frightening,” Boggs said.

According to the most recent crime statistics from the New York Police Department, 76 people have been murdered in the five boroughs this year, compared to 92 New Yorkers at the same time last year.

Save Our Streets is part of the city’s emergency response system. Their mission is to reduce violence in the five boroughs.

Despite a 17% decrease in homicides, Ramon Caba, director of community safety for Save Our Streets in the Bronx, describes the violence as a public health crisis.

Caba responded, “By having conversations, having conversations, getting individuals who are involved in the violence more resources, getting them more things to do.”

Every day, his team of violence interrupters is out on the streets, mediating and attempting to change behaviors and neighborhood norms.

“Violence is a learned behavior. I don’t wake up one day and decide I’m going to slap people around, stabbing people, or shooting people; there are other things going on in my mind and in my life that are probably prompting the violence that I’m exhibiting,” Caba explained.
