New York Lawmakers To Ban The Use Of Gas Stoves

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and several of her fellow Democrats in New York Lawmakers have signaled support for proposals that would prevent the use of water heaters, fossil fuel furnaces and gas stoves in a majority of the new buildings. Despite pushback from some Republicans over the state’s proposal, as well as Energy Sec. Jennifer Granholm’s declaring Thursday that “there’s no ban on gas stoves” at a federal level, New York lawmakers are poised to pass the legislation barring the use of certain gas-related utilities in new homes.

Hochul supported to ban on fossil fuel-based heating tools during her State of the State address in January. The governor suggested abolishing the sale of gas-powered appliances and restricting their installation in new buildings by 2025. Should it pass, the proposal would not spread to existing houses that use gas stoves or other gas-powered appliances. However, the state’s climate project could take such steps in the future.

Other States Also Participates With The Same Move

Moreover, other states like California and Washington have taken similar movements through building codes, New York would become the first state to do so with legislative action. In recent weeks, gas stoves have been branded as a threat to both public health and the planet that need to be phased out. To others, that notion is ridiculous.

On the health side, research shows in the 1980s unvented natural gas stoves can provoke indoor air pollution damaging young lungs and climate change concerns have produced some places to try to stop new gas lines from being run to new construction.
