The Energy Assistance Program (EAP) is a federally funded program that helps people in need pay their heating and electricity bills.

Because EAP is a one-time annual benefit, it does not help people cover their yearly heating and electric costs.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in November, “As we get close to these winter months, millions of hard-working families throughout the country are going to be looking for ways to keep their houses warm while also putting food on the table.”

The public could apply for Energy Assistance Program benefits online in early October, while the energy moratorium protection expired on March 15 and the application period is set to end on May 15.

Who qualifies for Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)?

You must need financial assistance with your home energy bills to be eligible for this benefit program. For example, SNAP, SSI, and TANF may automatically qualify a person who participates in them or has family members who do.

How do you find out the status of your application?

The State of Maryland provides an online platform for citizens to check the status of their Energy Assistance application.

You only need to enter your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. Allow 15 days from the date you submitted your application for the application to be displayed.

Most people check their LIHEAP application status after applying for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Because different agencies use different terms, it may be called checking a HEAP application status (Home Energy Assistance Program) or a LEAP application status (Low-income Energy Assistance Program) in some states or counties. Because an independent LIHEAP agency serves each area, the methods for checking your LIHEAP application status vary from state to state and sometimes between counties within the same condition.
