One person was killed and at least nine others were injured in a stampede sparked by reports of gunfire at a GloRilla concert in Rochester, New York on Sunday night, according to police. GloRilla, real name Gloria Hallelujah Woods, tweeted early Monday that she was “just now hearing about what happened…praying everyone is ok.”
According to a news release from the Rochester Police Department, as fans were leaving the GloRilla concert at the Main Street Armory shortly after 11 p.m., they thought they heard gunfire inside the venue, causing the crowd to surge and rush toward the exit. “We have no evidence of gunshots being fired or anyone being shot or stabbed,” police said, and they were unsure why fans thought they heard gunfire. Police are still investigating what caused the incident and who may have been responsible.
A 33-year-old woman died as a result of her injuries, while two others are in critical condition. “As the night progressed, an additional seven people arrived at local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries from the event,” police said. According to preliminary reports from witnesses on the scene, these injuries were caused by being trampled.”
The next scheduled performance at Rochester’s Main Street Armory, a Saturday performance by rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, has been canceled.
The police are now looking into what caused the stampede, citing “crowd size, shots fired, pepper spray, and other contributing factors” as possible causes. “When you go to a concert, you don’t expect to be trampled,” Evans told the Rochester-based Democrat and Chronicle. “Your loved ones expect you to be able to come home and talk about the great concert experience you had,” Evans said, adding that he would “hold people accountable for what happened last night, period.”
This is an ongoing story.
