Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, several families around the nation have been receiving emergency allotments for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, more commonly known as SNAP Food Benefits and often thought of as “food stamps.”
It was announced in January that the extension of SNAP benefits in Texas ensures that recipients of SNAP receive at least $95 a month. But in a state as big as Texas, a lot of people have come to depend on this money, and that money that’s soon coming to an end.
The chief executive officer of the West Texas Food Bank Libby Campbell joined the Texas Standard to talk about the state of SNAP benefits in Texas. Campbell said that some things go into the qualifications when it comes to asset verification that goes into qualifying for the SNAP benefits in texas. Moreover, food banks in texas are doing more pounds in west texas which covers 19 counties equivalent to 34,000 square miles of West Texas. “This year, we’re trending to do closer to probably between 13 and 14 million pounds distributed to those 19 counties,” Campbell said.

As coronavirus funding, food banks and recipients of SNAP obtained great help from USDA and the Texas Department of Agriculture. However, according to Campbell, several Texans will be affected by ending the SNAP benefits in texas. News from Texomas said that seventeen states already saw those benefits expire as of January 2023. One state, South Carolina, terminated the emergency allotment at the start of February. Moreover, for the remaining 32 states, plus Washington, D.C., Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the extra money will dry up starting with the March 2023 benefit month, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service.
