California Reparations Efforts
Kamilah Moore, the chair of California’s Reparations Task Force, is a direct descendant of enslaved people in the United States. Moreover, Moore is one of several leaders behind the nation’s groundbreaking reparations effort to examine the impact slavery and systemic racism have had on Black Americans and how to reverse the harm it’s done.
Furthermore, African American Reparations Advisory Committee in San Francisco has recommended providing a one-time payment of $5 million as part of a “reparation” effort. Eligible recipients will be funded directly to target community issues concerning housing, education disparities, and the racial wealth gap.
According to ABC30, the committee has proposed that the payment should be made to each black longtime resident. It was released last month that it will address reparations “to address the public guidelines explicitly designed to subjugate black people in San Francisco.”
The draft plan contains a long list of financial recommendations for black San Francisco residents, including a one-time, lump sum payment of $5 million to each eligible individual for the California reparations. According to the draft proposal, a one-time payment would compensate the affected population for the decades of harm,
Who Will Be Eligible For The California Reparation Program
to qualify for the program, the applicant should be at least 18 years old and have identified as Black or African American on public documents for at least ten years.
Applicant must also prove at least two of eight additional standards, choosing from a list that includes:
- Born in San Francisco around 1940 to 1996
- Proof of living in San Francisco for at least 13 years
- Personally, or the direct descendant of somebody, incarcerated by the failed war on drugs.
Lastly, At this stage, these are just proposals and the payments and the criteria have not yet been verified.
