A 30-year-old councilwoman in the borough of Sayreville, New Jersey, was found shot to death in her car on Wednesday, police said.
NJ Councilwoman Murdered
County officials said police responded to reports of shots fired after 7 in the evening and discovered a woman in her vehicle who sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene. The woman was identified as Sayreville, New Jersey, Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour, a Republican, and a mother aged 30 years old. The shooting incident occurred in her car in the parking lot of the Camelot at La Mer apartment complex, where she lived, police said.
Bystanders Recall Shots Fired And Unusual Sound From Car After Crash
Neighbors at the tree-lined complex described how they heard several shots before Dwumfour’s white vehicle rolled several feet into multiple vehicles parked within the lot. One resident named Isaac Oppong, 59, learned late Wednesday from his wife that his vehicle, a silver-colored Mercedes sedan, had been hit. Oppong, returned home around midnight to see the police presence in front of his building.
Another man, who asked to remain anonymous was in the apartment complex visiting family at that time and said he heard around six or nine shots. The man heard the gunshot sound and told his cousin to get down. “I saw the car roll and slammed into those cars,” the anonymous man said.
He added that he saw several police vehicles arrive within minutes and were trying to break the window of the car that was locked. The man described that Dwumfour was the only person in the car at the time. In the moments after her car crashed into the other vehicles, he could hear the sound of Dwumfour’s cell phone receiving several text messages in rapid succession. Dwumfour’s phone was connected, to a speaker so it was loud enough for the anonymous person to hear it. “It was more like, a bunch of text arriving sound of dings, dings, dings, but you heard it through the car speaker,” the man said.
Officials said the investigation is ongoing and police did not identify any motive for the shooting yet. Additionally, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said Dwumfour suffered several gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not released any further information about the case, and it was not clear as of press time if officials would be holding a press conference on Thursday.
