Tipping Amid Inflation
Inflation has tamed, but the country is likely on the brink of a recession and yet their consumers are, at the beginning of a long day, prompted with a request on a digital screen to tip 30% on a breakfast muffin. Tipping is equally significant to blockchain and Brexit, but super confusing. When and how much to tip will rely on any number of factors, including specific situations, services, or even the location. Tipping used to be about showing gratitude for good service, but as the minimum wage has plateaued and several workers have come to depend on it.
So how do you ensure people are properly compensated, especially when most service-industry workers rely on tips? but has tipping gone too far? Should customers draw a limit for the sake of their financial well-being?
Has Tipping Gone Too Far?
Considering the financial well-being of the barista. The average wage for a barista is $14.59 per hour in the US, plus $20.00 tips per day. Let’s say this hypothetical barista works five shifts a week and earns $100 a week. It is not the consumer’s fault that the barista possibly has to rely on tips to get by. But then the 20% or 30% is too high for a tip and it becomes inflation and leads to hot topics in common conversation. A 30% tip should be reserved for only the most excellent service after a complete dining experience, or treasured service people around the holidays.
Furthermore, deciding what to tip at a restaurant, tipping between 15% and 30 % is suggested, by Robin DiPietro, Ph.D., professor and director at the University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management that regardless of the level of service, gratuity at a restaurant is non-negotiable.
So If you’re only ordering drinks, go for flat amounts rather than percentages. Leave $1 for a beer and $2 for a cocktail, However, if you order a bar snack or the service was especially good, tip 20 percent. Lastly, if you plan not to tip at all, a convenience store or supermarket may be a better place to pick up your morning snack.
