Detroit may consider moving up the deadline to apply for a property tax relief program from December to October.
Detroit To Move Deadline For Property Tax Relief Program
The board responsible for hearing property tax appeals in the city of Detroit is asking City Council to consider amending the dates for the property tax relief program applications due date from December to October.
The move would trim the timeline to apply for the program in 2023. According to the board of director Willie Donwell, the new deadline would give the city of Detroit’s Property Assessment Board of Review more time to address the large number of applications that come in without demanded documents. This additional time would also provide the board with more time to review every application.
The Homeowners Property Tax Exemption (HOPE) program indicates to keep Detroiters at risk of foreclosure in their homes reduces or exempts qualifying homeowners from property taxes for the present year based on household income.
The Proposed Deadline Date
Donwell proposed amending the dates for the application will be starting October 1 and the last day to submit an application is December 11. The board processes applications and will decide three times a year in March, July, and December. Lastly, Donwell explained that the due date for the HOPE application bumps up against when the Board of Review needs to complete its work by the end of the year.
